The city of Accomac is home to the Accomack County Public Schools headquarters, servicing over 5,000 children in 11 different facilities. There is currently a situation occuring, where if one parent in Accomac has their way, none of those students will be allowed to read, or even discuss two well known classic novels by award winning American authors.

As reported by Kens5.com, a formal compliant has been filed to stop the use of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and “To Kill a Mockingbird” because there are 219 racial slurs embedded in Mark Twain’s classic and 49 found on the pages of Harper Lee’s chronicle. According to The Telegraph, it was “Marie Rothstein-Williams, the mother of a mixed race child,” who followed the school’s procedures in making a formal complaint. Rothstein-Williams believes that hearing these words validates their acceptability and children cannot be taught to think that these words are ok. (Out of the 5,000 students in the school system, 37% are of African American descent.) It appears Ms. Rothstein-Williams doesn’t want the students to have a learning experience where the children can hear these classic books and debate these very issues amongst themselves.

Accomack County Public Schools is making a formal inquiry into the matter by forming a committee to review the material.  The books are suspended from use until the principal, library media specialist, parent and teacher(s) make the final recommendations.

This isn’t the first time Mark Twain or Harper Lee have found their literary compositions on a banned list. Virginia University’s Library points out that since 1885, when “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” was first released, “it was condemned as racist” and immediately “banished” from the Concord Public Library. Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird,” currently holds the number four position on a list called Banned & Challenged Classics, put together by the American Library Association (ALA) who work to defend the First Amendment and protect your right to read whatever you want to read.

ALA stresses that a book challenge – like the case at the Accomack County Public Schools – is not a book ban. But, when it comes to censorship, they urge us to remember the words of Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas:

“Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of subversions. It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us. ”

Gravitational waves suggest the fabric of reality is laced together by cosmic strings /cosmicnews/2016-07-13-gravitational-waves-suggest-the-fabric-of-reality-is-made-of-cosmic-strings.html /cosmicnews/2016-07-13-gravitational-waves-suggest-the-fabric-of-reality-is-made-of-cosmic-strings.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/cosmicnews/2016-07-13-gravitational-waves-suggest-the-fabric-of-reality-is-made-of-cosmic-strings The detection of gravitational waves last February launched a wave of excitement in the astronomical community. Surfing on the tale end of the discovery, two Spain physicists believe the detection of gravitational waves could in turn help researchers detect cosmic strings, hypothetical one-dimensional subatomic particles that constitute the fabric of reality.

Whenever astronomers look out into the depths of space, they are observing the universe as it was in the past. This is because light travels at a finite speed. The light hitting Earth now started at an object a long time ago. For instance, light emitted by the sun takes eight minutes to reach Earth. Therefore, we are observing the sun as it was eight minutes ago.

The universe exploded into existence in a hot flash approximately 13.7 billion years ago. Since the early universe was much denser than it is today, light scattered a lot. The scattering caused information stored inside those photons to be lost. This creates a hurdle for scientists trying to peer back into the early universe, because there is a great deal of background noise to consider.

Strung out

This isn’t true with respect to gravitational waves, however. Gravitational waves are transparent, passing through the early universe. As a result, the waves will harbor information about the antecedent conditions that spawned them.

In addition, gravitational waves could be used to detect objects that do not emit light. These objects will be discernible because of how they disperse gravitational waves. In addition to detecting the presence of black holes, gravitational waves could unearth cosmic strings.

String theory is the leading candidate that attempts to blend general relativity, the physics of the very large, with quantum mechanics, the physics of the very small. As the name implies, string theory suggests the fabric of reality is laced together by tiny, microscopic strings. Unfortunately, observing cosmic strings would require energy levels far greater than what conventional colliders are capable of. Astronomers need energy scales on par with those which were at the big bang in order to catch a glimpse of these hypothetical entities.

Riding the gravitational wave

Since these energies surpass current capabilities, physicists must look for alternative options. According to Fernandez-Nunez and Oleg Bulashenko of the University of Barcelona, gravitational waves are that alternative option. They imagined a string as a sharp crease in space-time and calculated how the gravitational waves would propagate through the crease.

The team found the wave pattern would look exactly like a light beam that scattered off a thin wire. This means researchers can utilize classical optics to determine the spatial patterns of gravitational waves and how those patterns would permeate the fabric of space-time.

Nevertheless, there are issues that must be figured out in order to test the hypothesis. Currently, the technology necessary to measure gravitational waves that the researchers’ hypothesis demands does not exist. Furthermore, it is unlikely that astronomers would find a pattern with the right intensity from their location on Earth.

Regardless, gravitational wave astronomy is still a budding science. The researchers are proposing ideas about how their calculations can be used to help understand solid state physics. Their paper is available on the pre-print website arXiv.org and has yet to be peer reviewed by other astrophysicists.

Cyber terrorists can now bring entire cities to a standstill in an instant… leaving virtually every modern city vulnerable /cosmicnews/2016-07-12-cyber-terrorists-can-now-bring-entire-cities-to-a-standstill-in-an-instant-are-you-still-living-in-a-concrete-tomb.html /cosmicnews/2016-07-12-cyber-terrorists-can-now-bring-entire-cities-to-a-standstill-in-an-instant-are-you-still-living-in-a-concrete-tomb.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/cosmicnews/2016-07-12-cyber-terrorists-can-now-bring-entire-cities-to-a-standstill-in-an-instant-are-you-still-living-in-a-concrete-tomb Robert Hannigan is the Director of the UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHK). That agency name is chalk full of Orwellian intent. This communications group was not created for government transparency on the behalf of British tax payers. No, this is another arrow in the quiver of a global scientific dictatorship. GCHK is actually an electronic surveillance and eavesdropping unit, comparable to the U.S. National Security Agency, (NSA) whose ever expanding infrastructure still collects whatever data Americans generate while transacting or communicating. We’re a long ways from the Nazi’s use of IBM punch cards, a pre computer technology that packed a horrific punch. In today’s ever connected infrastructure, the power systems of the electronic grid, the military industrial complex’s entire system of command and control, numerous educational facilities and offerings, internet commerce, transportation infrastructure, medical data, financial markets and infinitum is connected to the vast cyberspace network and is vulnerable to attack.

Cyber attacks are coming that are much more devastating than what happened to Sony Pictures

In 2014, Sony Pictures was the recipient of a cyber attack that wiped out half of its network, erasing all data on approximately half of its personal computers and servers. Fortune Magazine called this attack, “a landmark event [that] struck terror in boardrooms and throughout corporate America…” But attacking a movie studio, embarrassing clients, ruining a movie release and having to rely on fax machines is a piece of cake compared to what Mr. Hannigan, the GCHQ Director foresees. The Telegraph reports:

“Terrorists and rogue states are gaining the capability to bring a major city to a standstill with the click of a button… Hannigan said the risk to cities like London would increase as more physical objects, such as cars and household appliances, are connected online – the so-called ‘internet of things.'”

Was the internet created to fail, like fractional reserve banking or electricity?

The “internet of things” (IOT) recently added a new smart refrigerator that takes its own picture, plays music, provides recipes and so much more. Barbie dolls have been designed to record conversations of the children who own them. Televisions have built in cameras and recorders so whoever is behind the screen can monitor who is watching the screen. The smart home of the future – indeed the “smart town” will have remote control and monitoring of your CO2 levels, your coming and going, your water and electricity use and when you have inefficient windows, the environmental police can come knock on your door. Your home will be equipped with microphones so any discussion about “no vaccines” can be squelched by education. All of this smart technology could end in a flash via an intense lightning storm. Losing a few days of food from your SMART refrigerator is nothing compared to an EMP or cyber attack that could destroy a town’s water system or nuclear power plant.

Having all things connected means all things are easier to destroy with the push of a button

Here’s a thought to ponder. Who’s behind the internet curtain? It’s been leveraged as a social monitoring device, a dehumanizing force, a WiFi command and control grid and an economic engine to make trillions as the market bulls up, and probably much more when the internet – and your local city – collapses. The brotherhood of darkness works like that. Creating things in order to destroy, rebuild and control the aftermath. Like Iraq.

The admonition to “come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plaques” seems more appropriate than ever.

Near total collapse of Venezuela reveals what happens when Big Government controls the prices and supplies of food: STARVATION! /cosmicnews/2016-06-07-near-total-collapse-of-venezuela-reveals-what-happens-when-big-government-controls-the-prices-and-supplies-of-food-starvation.html /cosmicnews/2016-06-07-near-total-collapse-of-venezuela-reveals-what-happens-when-big-government-controls-the-prices-and-supplies-of-food-starvation.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/cosmicnews/2016-06-07-near-total-collapse-of-venezuela-reveals-what-happens-when-big-government-controls-the-prices-and-supplies-of-food-starvation Venezuelans are facing tumultuous times. Inflation rates are running at 700%. Standing in line for hours and hours, and risking one’s life, to buy what ever staple of food that might be available is the norm. The lack of minerals, vitamins and robust nutrition in food shortages could mean starvation for the weakest in society. These dire circumstances didn’t happen overnight, and there are multiple forces at work.

Food seemed aplenty during the Chavez Agrarian revolution in 1999, but the oil profits used to fund that movement have greatly diminished.

According to Business Insider, “Government supporters have long pointed proudly to the improvement in eating under socialist leader Hugo Chavez, who used oil income to subsidize food for the poor during his 14 years in office (1999 to 2013) and won UN plaudits for it.

“But Reuters notes that [President Nicolas] Maduro, Chavez’s successor, has faced a collapse in the price of oil, which provides almost all of Venezuela’s foreign income…  According to a recent study, 87% of Venezuelans say their income is now insufficient to purchase their food needs. Shoppers routinely spend hours in lines to buy staples such as corn flour and laundry soap, turning lines into sites of shoving matches and now more frequent attempts to plunder shops.”

‘Control oil and you control the nations; control food and you control the people.’ This quote is attributed to Henry Kissinger.

President Maduro declared an economic emergency in January, opening the door to more government control of private enterprise. These actions come after years of long lines and shortages, as reported by Activistpost.com.

“In 2013, many began to suspect that the outlook for Venezuela was grim when prepping became illegal. The Attorney General of Venezuela, Luisa Ortega Díaz, called on prosecutors to target people who are ‘hoarding’ basic staples with serious sanctions.

“Shortly thereafter, grocery stores instituted a fingerprint registry to purchase food and supplies. Families had to register and were allotted a certain amount of supplies to prevent ‘hoarding’ … Thousands of people were standing in line for 5-6 hours in the hopes that they would be able to purchase a few much-needed items.

“[Additionally,] farmers in Venezuela were forced to hand over their crops last summer. [Madur’s government] assumed control of essential goods like food, and began putting retail outlets out of business. Then, once they had control of the sales outlets, they began forcing farmers and food manufacturers to sell anywhere from 30 – 100% of their products to the state at the price the state opted to pay, as opposed to stores and supermarkets.”

In the midst of this grave darkness, there remains a light of profound victory.

The late President Hugo Chavez’s strides to create a national policy of food sovereignty with agroecological methods was not without critical gains. And even in the midst of this crisis, one critical gain remains: the 2004 law banning transgenic (genetically modified) seeds. This remains a tremendous victory that still stands, although those who push GMOs are anxious to swoop into Venezuela and “save it from starvation.”

Global Justice reports, “Venezuela’s step [banning GMOs] is hugely impressive, first because of the food shortages the country is undergoing – a result of deep dependency on the international market and destabilisation efforts coming from inside and outside the country. One commentator points out ‘Venezuelans are not being fooled by promises of a quick fix to increase food production.'”

You may have experienced empty grocery store racks during a extended weather event. But make no mistake. Food sovereignty is not ultimately the responsibility of your government or your local grocer. What is happening in Venezuela could happen in America.

Barack Obama during his initial presidential campaign and upon taking office, now serve as the basis for some of the worst political chicanery in the history of the nation.

After winning the White House, newly elected-President Obama made his first speech to a joint session of Congress on Feb. 24, 2009, in which he made a number of statements that today seem to be oddly out of place at best, and outright lies at worst.

For instance, the president said in that first speech, barely a month after his inauguration, that he and Congress shouldered a “responsibility” to not pass on to our children a federal debt they cannot pay.

“There is, of course, another responsibility we have to our children,” Obama said. “And that’s the responsibility to ensure that we do not pass on to them a debt they cannot pay. That is critical.”

At that instant, a smiling, chuckling Obama paused to accept a standing ovation from the chamber, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., sitting in camera view behind Obama, one of the first to stand.

“Yeah, I agree. Absolutely,” Obama said in accepting the applause, as reported by CNSNews.com.

“See, I know we can get some consensus in here,” Obama said, as the chamber erupted in laughter.

“With the deficit we inherited, the cost of the crisis we face, and the long-term challenges we must meet, it has never been more important to ensure that as our economy recovers, we do what it takes to bring this deficit down. That is critical,” he said.

On that day, according to U.S. Treasury figures, the national debt stood at $10,843,355,058,860.91.

At the close of business Jan. 14 of this year, the national debt stood at 18,923,558,492,862.95, with more than $13 trillion of it held by the general public. What’s more, according to the Washington Times, the debt is liable to be double what it was in 2009 by the time Obama leaves office a year from now.

As cited by CNS News, Census Bureau figures stated that 74,548,215 people under 18 years of age were “living in the United States as of July 2009, the year Obama gave this speech.”

“That means that the federal debt now equals approximately $253,365 for each of the Americans who was 18 and under in the year President Obama declared to Congress that he and they share a responsibility not to pass on to our children a debt they cannot pay,” the news site continued.

There was more Obama deception, though the amount of debt added during his presidency is bad enough. In a single paragraph, he made so many claims and said so many things that would turn out to be demonstrably false:

The fact is, our economy did not fall into decline overnight, nor did all of our problems begin when the housing market collapsed or the stock market sank. We have known for decades that our survival depends on finding new sources of energy, yet we import more oil today than ever before. The cost of health care eats up more and more of our savings each year, yet we keep delaying reform. Our children will compete for jobs in a global economy that too many of our schools do not prepare them for. And though all these challenges went unsolved, we still managed to spend more money and pile up more debt, both as individuals and through our Government, than ever before. [Emphasis added]

As anyone who drives knows, gasoline is at its lowest level now, today, precisely because we did find “new sources of energy” or rather, we used technology to harvest more of the energy we had – just not the kind Obama the Green cares for. Those ventures, funded by taxpayers, have been failures.

For far too many Americans, out-of-pocket health care expenses have risen dramatically since Obama and Democrats’ “reform” efforts.

American students still soak up more resources than virtually all other developed countries, but continue to lag behind other countries in important subjects.

And as noted, Obama has doubled the national debt. Congress has some responsibility as well, but Obama has routinely threatened to veto budgets that did not increase spending.

While extraterrestrial life may exist, “The Secret NASA Transmissions” video is not proof of it /cosmicnews/2015-12-11-while-extraterrestrial-life-may-exist-the-secret-nasa-transmissions-video-is-not-proof-of-it.html /cosmicnews/2015-12-11-while-extraterrestrial-life-may-exist-the-secret-nasa-transmissions-video-is-not-proof-of-it.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/cosmicnews/2015-12-11-while-extraterrestrial-life-may-exist-the-secret-nasa-transmissions-video-is-not-proof-of-it This is a review of a video called “The Secret NASA Transmissions: The Smoking Gun.” The video is called the most popular underground tape among astronauts, and it claims to show video evidence of aliens in space. There’s allegedly some form of intelligent life flying around on the NASA videos.

I decided to take a look at this video because a lot of people were mentioning it, and they knew that I was interested in evidence of life beyond Earth (even if it’s just microbial life on Mars). While it’s true that I am curious about things out that run counter to the mainstream, I do not automatically believe those things. In fact, I’m skeptical of everything I hear, see or view. I may be one of very few genuine skeptics taking a serious look at this video, because most so-called skeptics running around the internet today have already made up their minds on everything (they either dismiss all UFOs as nonsense without even bothering to look at the evidence, or at the other extreme, they automatically believe all UFO videos without any sense of healthy skepticism).

For me though, I take a look at everything with an open mind and decide if it makes any sense. And when I view this secret NASA transmissions video, I don’t see anything resembling alien life or UFOs, I just see a bunch of space dust, floating crystals, lens effects and camera zooms that are grossly misinterpreted as showing piloted alien spacecraft. And this is from a guy who believes, beyond any doubt, that there is extraterrestrial life beyond planet Earth. It’s out there, but as far as I can tell, it’s not on this video.

For example, there’s one segment in this video that claims to show a UFO in outer space that zooms along at a certain angle and then it suddenly changes course and travels at a different angle. The narrator points this out very excitedly in the video, and I’ve heard other people talk about this particular sequence. They say, “See? Look! That object changed direction.” Well, the truth is, if you look at what’s happening in that video sequence — and anybody who knows anything whatsoever about videography would be able to recognize this — what’s actually happening is that the camera is filming during a zoom function. That is, the lens zooms quickly while an object is slowly making its way across the screen from left to right.

When the zoom stops, it appears that the object that moving from left to right suddenly and miraculously changes its angle of motion. In reality, it was always moving in a straight line, it’s just that our frame of reference of it was altered during the zoom of the camera lens. I can reproduce the exact same thing with any video camera. It’s very easy to do, and in fact you can see in this video that the camera is zooming because all the stars in the background are zooming too. It’s a very abrupt zoom of the camera lens, by the way. It starts suddenly and it ends suddenly, indicating the zoom is undoubtedly motorized (it’s not a hand-controlled zoom). This is what makes the object appear to abruptly change direction. In fact, it’s just some object floating out there in space, moving along in a straight line without changing direction at all.

But this all gets misinterpreted as “proof” that an object instantly changed direction in outer space. Therefore, it must be an alien spacecraft. Some people, it seems, want to believe in this “proof” so badly that their conscious minds will erase the stars in the background of the video that clearly show the starting and stopping of a camera zoom function. In other words, it’s certainly not proof of aliens among us, but it is proof that some people in the UFO community are unbelievably gullible and have absolutely no common sense (or don’t understand the laws of physics or basic camera mechanics).

Interestingly, most of the serious UFO folks undoubtedly agree with me. There’s far better evidence of UFOs available than what’s shown in this video. And the really smart people who follow this topic aren’t fooled by camera zoom effects, either. So I don’t mean to paint this as something that represents the entire UFO community — clearly, it doesn’t. It’s really more of a joke than anything offering serious footage of UFOs. Anybody who takes this video seriously is marching down the wrong path if they want to find hard evidence of extraterrestrial life.

If there’s one thing that’s missing from a lot of the talk about UFOs today, it’s basic skepticism. Having an open mind is great, but you’ve also got to engage that brain and consider other explanations for what you’re seeing on film. One reason the UFO community has so little credibility among mainstream scientists today is precisely because it is steeped in video hoaxes and footage of natural phenomena that are hyped up as proof of alien life. It’s sort of like crying wolf one time too many: When real UFOs show up, who will believe it?

A lot of people who’ve read my work may be surprised by this personal assessment of the secret NASA transmissions video. They might think, “What happened to Mike? I thought he believed in alternative theories?” I do believe in many alternative theories, but I arrived at them all through a process of skepticism. I believe that there is microbial life on Mars right now. There’s no question in my mind that there is intelligent life in the universe far beyond what we know about today. I believe in the Drake equation. When you calculate the Drake equation, the result says there should be billions of planets harboring intelligent life in our galaxy alone, not to mention other galaxies. I also believe that NASA is hiding a lot of information, especially about Mars. I believe there is water on Mars and there is microbial life to be found in that water, even if it’s largely frozen. Every heard of extremophiles? I think NASA is withholding a lot of information from the public on many subjects. And I’d love to see all that caught on film, but the Secret NASA Transmissions video is definitely not it.

I believe that a lot of what scientists say today about the universe is flat wrong. For example, scientists don’t really have a good understanding of what comets are made of. They don’t even know what the Earth is made of, or the sun. So, you may find that many of the people who believe in the secret NASA transmissions video are some of the same people that I might tend to agree with on many subjects, but not on this one. I don’t see a single thing in this entire video (and I’ve watched it twice) that is moving in any way that couldn’t be explained by the basic physics of common particles. You know, some of this could just be ice crystals. It could be the urine dumps outside the space capsules, it could be space dust, or it could be debris from the capsules. All this stuff is just moving in a constant line of direction, just as things do in space.

At one point in the video, the narrator points to something that’s flashing as it moves across the screen, as if the flash itself is supposed to indicate intelligent life. Didn’t they consider that maybe it’s just a solid piece of metal that just happens to be spinning and rotating? Of course it’s going to flash as it moves through space because once an object is rotating and floating around in space, it will not stop rotating on its own. There’s no friction in space, so these objects are going to continue to appear to flash in a steady pattern. It doesn’t mean they are alive, it just means they reflect light and are spinning. For the life of me, I can’t figure out why so many people don’t understand basic physics, especially when it comes to looking for UFOs in space. Do I believe that UFOs exist? Do I believe there is intelligent life in the universe? Absolutely, no question about it; they are just not on this video.

The bigger question is this: Is advanced technology flying around our planet? The answer is undoubtedly yes. There may be some super-advanced military technology. Some of it may be some revamped Nikola Tesla technology, who knows? Maybe the Roswell UFO crash was the real thing and there was some technology taken from that crash as portrayed in the movie “Independence Day.” There’s a lot of weird stuff flying around out there, but again, I don’t see any sign of alien life on this video. In fact, I’m glad this video exists and I hope that the producers of this video continue their search, because maybe they will find some really convincing, hard evidence at some point, but right now, all I see is obvious misinterpretations of what people are seeing on their screens.

On the back of the cover of this DVD, there’s a large quote at the top that says, “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.” While I agree with that statement, this video is definitely not the proof. If you believe this video offers proof of aliens among us, you need to retake Physics 101. There’s not a single alien on the entire video. Not even a muppet alien.

There is, however, a fascinating array of flashy junk floating around in space that’s been caught on film. And if you’re interested in watching small particles spin and move in straight lines in outer space, you may love this film.

Aliens may have already polluted the universe, say scientists /cosmicnews/2015-12-11-aliens-may-have-already-polluted-the-universe-say-scientists-2.html /cosmicnews/2015-12-11-aliens-may-have-already-polluted-the-universe-say-scientists-2.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/cosmicnews/2015-12-11-aliens-may-have-already-polluted-the-universe-say-scientists-2 A new space telescope scheduled to launch in 2018 may be able to look for signs of pollution caused by advanced alien civilizations, according to a paper by researchers from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics published in the Astrophysical Journal.

Looking for evidence of pollution may be a new mechanism of trying to detect life on other planets, the researchers said.

“People often refer to ETs [extra-terrestrials] as ‘little green men,’ but the ETs detectable by this method should not be labeled ‘green’ since they are environmentally unfriendly,” co-author Avi Loeb said.

Pollution indicates “unintelligent” life

“Humanity is on the threshold of being able to detect signs of alien life on other worlds,” reads a press release on the work. “By studying exoplanet atmospheres, we can look for gases like oxygen and methane that only coexist if replenished by life.”

But studying the atmospheres of other planets might also turn up evidence of industrially produced pollutants such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), they note.

On Earth, CFCs are used in aerosols and solvents but also destroy the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere that helps protect the planet’s surface from harmful solar radiation.

According to calculations by the Harvard-Smithsonian researchers, NASA’s new, $8.7-billion Webb Space Telescope could be able to detect the presence of CFCs in the atmospheres of distant planets.

The Webb Telescope will be between 10 and 100 times stronger than the Hubble Space Telescope.

A sufficiently advanced civilization might, in turn, be able to detect our presence on Earth through similar means.

“We consider industrial pollution as a sign of intelligent life, but perhaps civilizations more advanced than us, with their own SETI [Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence] programs, will consider pollution as a sign of unintelligent life since it’s not smart to contaminate your own air,” lead author Henry Lin said.

Pollutants last 50,000 years

Although planned to be the most advanced space telescope to date, the Webb Telescope still has very real limitations and could only detect CFC concentrations approximately 10 times higher than those currently found on Earth. It would also only be able to detect CFCs in the atmospheres of Earth-like planets orbiting white dwarf stars. A stronger telescope would be needed to find lower concentrations of CFCs, or CFCs on planets orbiting bright stars like our sun.

White dwarfs are stars that have consumed nearly all of their hydrogen and collapsed into a very small, dense state. Astronomers believe that most stars will eventually become white dwarfs.

Some researchers have previously assumed that planets orbiting stars more like the sun would be better places to search for life. But the researchers note that planets capable of supporting life could hypothetically survive the “red giant” phase of white dwarf formation, or could even have formed from material shed by the collapsing star.

And while CFC levels more than 10 times higher than those found on Earth might indicate pollution, they might also indicate deliberate planetary engineering — for example, an alien civilization might deliberately flood the atmosphere with CFCs to raise its temperature into the habitable range.

Because CFCs are such long-lived pollutants — persisting in Earth’s atmosphere for up to 50,000 years — the Webb Telescope might also end up detecting historical, rather than current, evidence of alien civilization. Detecting the presence of long-lived atmospheric pollutants but not shorter-lived ones (some pollutants last only 10 years, for example), would indicate a historical change in pollution rates.

“[W]e could speculate that the aliens wised up and cleaned up their act,” Loeb said. “Or in a darker scenario, it would serve as a warning sign of the dangers of not being good stewards of our own planet.”

Atmosphere of Mars was destroyed by ‘catastrophic event’ four billion years ago /cosmicnews/2015-12-11-atmosphere-of-mars-was-destroyed-by-catastrophic-event-four-billion-years-ago.html /cosmicnews/2015-12-11-atmosphere-of-mars-was-destroyed-by-catastrophic-event-four-billion-years-ago.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/cosmicnews/2015-12-11-atmosphere-of-mars-was-destroyed-by-catastrophic-event-four-billion-years-ago The Curiosity Rover, deployed to Mars just a year ago, is bringing back new evidence of historic atmospheric upheaval on the red planet. NASA scientists hypothesize that volcanic eruptions or a massive collision stripped away the atmosphere of Mars about four billion years ago. According to new rock samples, that atmosphere was likely oxygen rich. The new-found observations of the Red Planet are now being used in comparison with Earth’s climate as the possibility of putting humans on Mars is discussed. Scientists also ponder Earth’s fragile atmospheric conditions, asking the question, “Is a disaster similar to the one being studied on Mars capable of wiping out Earth oxygen rich environment?”

Dr. Chris Webster at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena is leading a study that compares Mars’s climate with Earth’s.

The goal is to put explorers from Earth on the red planet. Dr Paul Mahaffy from Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Center, believes further analysis is needed before human’s are allowed to visit Mars, as levels of atmospheric gases are further tested. “From a practical standpoint we need to know the composition of the atmosphere today, and how it is changing, so that we can prepare for the eventual arrival of human explorers,” said Dr. Mahaffy.

First measurements of gases on Mars

The first measurements of Mars’s atmosphere are now being studied. The new findings from the Curiosity Rover suggest that a host of gases exist in Mars’s atmosphere, including oxygen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, and argon.

The journal Science already contains two published parallel studies detailing the state of Mars’s atmosphere for sustaining life, how the climate has changed over time, and how the planet once harbored an oxygen rich environment.

One of the studies, led by NASA’s Dr. Chris Webster, compares Mars’s rock crater data directly with Earth’s climate data.

The breakdown

Dr. Webster expounds, “As Mars became a planet and its magma solidified, catastrophic out-gassing occurred while volatiles were delivered by impact of comets and other small bodies.”

“Our Curiosity measurements are – for the first time – accurate enough to make direct comparisons with measurements done on Earth on meteorites using sophisticated large instrumentation that gives high accuracy results.”

As scientists compare the two parallel studies, it is the first time two separate studies utilizing different techniques have elicited the same composition results.

Mars once had an oxygen rich environment

And both results point out that Mars was once teaming with oxygen. Monica Grady, professor of planetary sciences at The Open University, wrote that, “These findings reverse the results from the Phoenix mission and clear up some confusion over the composition of the Martian atmosphere.”

NASA’s Spirit rover has recently brought back rock samples from Mars’s Gusev crater, showing five times as much nickel in their composition compared to meteorites that have fallen to Earth. The science behind the nickel-rich rocks point out that these rocks formed in an oxygen rich environment at least 3.7 billion years ago, while the meteorites that fell to Earth, which are dated between 180 million and 1.4 billion years old, did not.

Scientists conclude that Mars’s ancient oxygen-rich atmosphere thrived more than a billion years before Earth and they believe that a major event ripped apart the atmosphere about four billion years ago. By comparing ratios of argon gas on both Mars and Earth, scientists predict that a huge catastrophic event changed their relative amounts at similar times.

According to researchers, a likely event known as subduction occurred. The oxygen rich material on Mars’s surface might have been drawn into the planets interior and regurgitated to the surface as eruptions hexed the planet.

Now the question is being asked “Can the same demise that impacted Mars ultimately destroy the atmosphere of our planet Earth?”
